A January 14, 2016 People Magazine article profiled B. Smith’s Alzheimer’s journey and her new book co-authored with her husband Dan Gasby. According to the article, “Gasby said he and Smith dedicated the book to Congress, in hopes that legislators will increase funding for research to find a cure for a disease he says affects mostly women and African Americans. ‘This is a disease that should be beaten by this country with all of the technology and all of the smarts that we have,’ he says. ‘We should be leading (the world) in this. Every 67 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The cost of care to a family is unbelievable.’”
A January 14, 2016 University of California statement announced that the university “launched a program to accelerate the development of promising Alzheimer’s disease research by UC scientists.” According to the article, “The goal of the UC Cures for Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative is to move research for potential treatments for the disorder into early proof-of-concept clinical trials. The clinical trials will be coordinated by the Alzheimer’s Disease Cooperative Study (ADCS) at UC San Diego, which named University of British Columbia neurologist Howard Feldman, MD, as its new director today.”
