Gary B. - My Story with Alzheimer's

Share:

I used to be a high functioning person. I had a high IQ, I went to law school at night while running a real estate joint venture between a regional developer and a regional financial institution and I still graduated in the top 25% if my class. I became a transactional real estate attorney working for companies that owned and/or leased real estate as part of their core business. A few years ago it started taking me longer to get my work done, I was less organized and had piles of paper on my desk. I got fired from 2 companies within 3 years. I didn't know what was causing this, was I just overloaded with work? My wife was aware of my short term memory loss and it was a real strain on our marriage. I finally went to a Neurologist. I was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment and now Alzheimer's, which answered our questions and saved our mariage because it explained the problem. We are now very involved with the Alzheimer's Association in LA, and have formed our own non-profit to create awareness about the disease. Someone in the US developes this insidious disease every 67 seconds in the US alone. The baby boomers are going to be decimated by Alzheimer's. It is estimated that 5 million Americans have the disease now and 16 million will have Alzheimer's by 2050. It will bankrupt Medicare & Medicaid. The NIH has a study stating that Alz is the most expensive disease in the US. Resources need to be allocated to overcome this disease. Please write, call and/or visit you Congress representatives in Washington. Alzheimer's is the only one of the 10 top diseases that has no cure! We need all the resources we can get to overcome this disease!! Thannk you in advance for doing your part!!
